About

A guide first.
A tool next.

REGISTAR started with a question: why do so many independent artists never see royalties they've earned? The answer turned out to be less about money than about admin nobody explains. This site is the explanation; the tool comes after.

Why it exists

The money is collected. It just goes unclaimed.

Every time a song is streamed, broadcast or played in public, the UK's collection societies gather money for it. Artists with a label or publisher have someone making sure that money comes home. Artists who release everything themselves often don't — so the share sits unclaimed until it's redistributed to someone else.

That gap isn't dramatic; it's friction: three separate societies, three sets of forms, and a vocabulary built for the industry rather than the artist. REGISTAR removes that friction — first by explaining it in plain English, then by building the tool that does the registration for you.

Where it came from

Built out of research, not a pitch deck.

The site grew out of dissertation research into uncollected royalties in the UK independent scene — reading the societies' own annual reports and following the money from a single play to an artist's account.

01

Independent first

Written for artists with no label or publisher doing this for them — the people the existing guidance tends to skip.

02

Plain English

Every acronym is defined the first time it appears, and again in the glossary. No jargon left unexplained.

03

Sourced

The numbers come from PRS for Music and PPL's own published results, cited on the page where they appear.

One honest note

This is guidance, not financial or legal advice.

REGISTAR explains how the system works and points you to the right bodies, but the exact forms, fees and rules live on each society's own site and change from time to time. Always check the current details with PRS for Music and PPL directly before you register. If your situation is complicated — disputed splits, overseas income, an existing publishing deal — it's worth speaking to a specialist.
