The Money Gap
Every time a song is played on radio, streamed, or used in a shop or venue, money is collected for it. For most independent artists, that money is never claimed — because the song was never registered.
The problem
Getting a track onto Spotify and Apple Music is the part everyone knows how to do — your distributor handles it. But a distributor doesn't register your work with the collection societies, and those societies pay out a large share of what your music earns.
Each society collects a different slice of that money — broadcast, streaming, public play, physical copies — but none of them can pay you if they don't know the song is yours. (Who collects what is the next page.) The money is gathered either way; it just sits unclaimed until someone registers the work.
That's the gap between "my music is out" and "my music is earning everything it should." For independent artists with no label or publisher doing this for them, that gap is where income is lost.
The money these societies handle is large, which is why being absent from their records costs so much.
£1.07 bn
paid out by PRS for Music to songwriters, composers and publishers in 2025
£277 m
distributed by PPL to performers and recording rightsholders in 2025
16,000
performers PPL paid for the very first time in 2025 — money that was waiting until they were identified
Figures: PRS for Music 2025 financial results (£1.07 bn paid to members; £1.24 bn collected) and PPL 2025 results (£277.7 m distributed; 16,000 first-time payees).
Four reasons registration gets pushed to "later".
Before you register, it helps to know which society collects which royalty — and which apply to you as an independent artist.
